What is a B Corp?

A B Corp is a company that has been verified to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.  B Corp is a global movement of people using business as a force for good. Together we can create sustainable economies that benefit all people, communities and the planet, while addressing society’s most pressing challenges.

Why did we become a B Corp?

The global non-profit “B Labs” certifies companies by scoring them in six categories: Governance; Workers; Community; Environment Customers, and Impact. We answered hundreds of questions, and B Labs crack team of analysts looked under every rock to verify that we walk the talk. Certified companies are expected to re-certify every three years.

Being a B Corp does not mean we’re perfect, nor that we’ve achieved our highest impact. It shows that we are committed to continuing to improve and grow, put artists and audiences first, and grow as a business without sacrificing standards for social and environmental responsibility.

…and that’s not all

As part of our B Corp journey, we also became a B.C. Benefit Company.  B.C. Benefit companies have a legal obligation to operate in a socially responsible and sustainable manner, and to promote specific public benefits.  Atomic Cartoons has committed to the following public benefits:

“In support of tomorrow’s stories and storytellers, we will support and promote young emerging talent, particularly those from indigenous, diverse or underserved communities, support the advancement of women in screen-based media industries, and promote respect for the natural world, with an emphasis on urgent climate action to combat climate change.”

What is it like to work for a B Corp?

Working for  B Corp means being proud of what you do every day.  Nothing lights us up more than knowing our artists love what they do. We support our artists in multiple ways, through team building events, flexible schedules, living wages, robust benefits, various perks and bonuses and paid volunteer-hours so that you can give back to the causes you believe in.

Everyone belongs here.

Our Commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

We want our artists to love being here! Our commitment is to strive to be a studio where everyone feels they are a welcome, included, and valued member of the team. We prioritize employee wellbeing, work-life balance, as well as indigenous reconciliation, diversity, equity and inclusion, both on and off-screen. We will never stop working to do the best we can for our artists and improve the representation of diverse groups and perspectives in our studios and projects.

We produce shows that put diversity and inclusion front and centre.  Molly of Denali (PBS) a show about an Alaskan Native American girl and her family won a Peabody Award (2020) and a Kidscreen Award for Inclusivity (2021). Young Love (Max/Sony), a TV-spin off of the Oscar-winning short, Hair Love, is an animated family sitcom showcasing the diverse, multigenerational experiences of a Black, Millennial family from the Midwest. Meanwhile, animated shows like Pinecone & Pony (Apple TV+) and Princess Power (Netflix) empower the next generation of girls with a fun, lighthearted approach to breaking down gender barriers and exploring themes about problem-solving, friendship, and individuality.

Environmental Sustainability

For artists who live on planet earth

As one of Canada’s largest animation studios, we have a responsibility to make environmental sustainability integral to how we work. We’ve made commitments to track and reduce our carbon footprint, and to support the decarbonization of our industry – all while being transparent about our efforts.

We support artists with the option to work remotely, which not only supports work-life balance, but cuts work-associated carbon by 54%!  Last year, we converted the Vancouver studio to renewable natural gas, which will reduce our facilities footprint by almost 25%. We also take seriously our role as a producer of art and culture. We believe that we can have a positive impact by using art to speak to kids, adults, and families about crucial environmental and social challenges.
