2nd Annual Kooks And Legends: Animated Motion Pictures

ANIMATION GODFATHER MARV NEWLAND CURATES ANIMATION SCREENING AT VIFF

(Vancouver, BC) – Marv Newland – recently described as the “Godfather of Vancouver animation” by the Province newspaper – has teamed up with Vancouver animation studio Atomic Cartoons to present Kooks & Legends Part Two, the second annual animation event screened as part of the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Kooks and Legends Part Two, which will be held on October 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Rio, will be a 90 minute long look at a selection of rarely, or never seen, animated short films curated by Newland, founder of Vancouver’s animated film production company International Rocketship.

The programme will include international and Canadian animation featuring a wide range of techniques and a wider range of creative approaches devised by mainly independent minded animators.

Films to be screened in this edition of Kooks and Legends will include: LA JOIE DE VIVRE (1934), a charming and surreal French film, DOG BRAIN (1988) from local director J.Falconer, AT THE QUINTE HOTEL from local director Bruce Alcock, Global Mechanic (2005) featuring Canadian poet Al Purdy’s poem of the same name, BEIJING FLIP BOOK (2003) from Marv Newland of International Rocketship, INSIDE LOOGALAND (2016), Jake Brassard’s first film and ABUT (2011) from Emily Carr graduate Alison Hrabluik.

The evening promises to be a celebration of animation, with many of the films’ directors in attendance. Newland will introduce the films, and will also hold a Q&A for those in attendance. The Vancouver industry has long been a hub of animation and as reporter Stuart Derdeyn of the Province newspaper recently wrote “production at studios is booming all over town”.

Marv Newland is an animation director, and founder of International Rocketship, whose films include Bambi Meets Godzilla, Anijam, Black Hula, Postalolio and CMYK. His animation has been screened in festivals all over the world and has won prizes including the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France.

Atomic Cartoons is a full service animation company, and was recently acquired by Vancouver-based Thunderbird Films, an international producer and distributor of television and film content.
